Japanese is a language of somewhat disputed classification spoken by over 127 million people mainly in Japan and by Japanese emigrant communities around the world. It is considered an agglutinative language and is distinguished by a fairly complex system of honorifics—a reflection of the highly hierarchical nature of Japanese society—which has resulted in separate conjugations of verbs and adjectives as well as context-specific nouns and pronouns which are used to determine the social relationship, age, sex and status of the speaker and listener as well as the potential third party being discussed. The sound inventory of Japanese is relatively small and the language has a pitch accent system consisting of two separate accents which are lexically distinctive.
JAPANESE
Though largely accepted to be completely unrelated, Japanese has been heavily influenced by Chinese over a period of at least 1,500 years. It is written with a mix of borrowed Chinese characters (kanji) and a modified syllabary (kana), also originally based on Chinese characters with similar pronunciation. Scholarly and scientific vocabulary has been imported from Chinese in a way that is similar to the influence of Latin on Western European languages.
